Why grounding helps
When your nervous system is activated, your brain perceives threat even when you're safe. Grounding techniques use your senses and body to send a clear signal: you're here, you're present, and you're okay right now.

5-4-3-2-1 Technique
Name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste. This pulls your attention out of racing thoughts and anchors you to the present moment through your senses. Go slowly — let each observation register before moving to the next.

03
Body Scan Practice
Starting at your feet, notice each part of your body moving upward. Where do you feel tension? Where do you feel neutral or calm? You're not trying to change anything — just noticing. This reconnects you to your body and helps release the tension that builds during stress.

Cold Water Reset
Splash cold water on your face, hold an ice cube, or run your hands under cold water for 30 seconds. The temperature shift activates your vagus nerve and signals your nervous system to shift out of high alert. It's quick and remarkably effective.

05
Paced Breathing
Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, breathe out for 6. The longer exhale tells your body it's safe to relax. You don't need to force it — even a few rounds can begin to shift your state. This works because your breath directly influences your nervous system.

What to expect
Grounding won't make overwhelming feelings disappear instantly, and that's okay. With practice, these tools help you recognize activation sooner, feel safer in your body, and respond to the present rather than react from the past — at a pace that feels right for you.
