ANXIETY
Why Your Body Reacts Before Your Mind Can Catch Up
@EVOLVETHERAPYSD
What Anxiety Actually Is
Anxiety is your nervous system's way of protecting you from perceived danger. It's not a flaw or weakness — it's an automatic response that can become overactive when life feels overwhelming or uncertain.

MANY NOTICE
Common Anxiety Responses
1
Your heart races, your breathing gets shallow, or your chest feels tight before you even register a worried thought.
2
Your mind goes blank or foggy when you need to make decisions, even simple ones that usually feel automatic.
3
You avoid situations, people, or tasks because the anticipation alone feels too heavy to carry.

STEP ONE
Ground Your Body First
When anxiety spikes, your body needs to feel safe before your mind can think clearly. Try placing both feet flat on the floor, noticing the pressure, or holding something cool or textured in your hand.

STEP TWO
Slow Your Breathing Down
Breathe in slowly for four counts, hold gently for four, then exhale for six. Longer exhales signal your nervous system that you're safe, helping your body shift out of high alert.

STEP THREE
Name What You Can Control
Anxiety grows when everything feels uncertain. Choose one small, concrete action you can take right now — even something tiny — to remind your system that you have agency. This is educational content, not therapy or medical advice.
